Independent streak

Smokey doesn't indiscriminately make cute.

The neighbors are getting to know Smokey now that he likes to escape into the hallway to lounge around. One of the neighbors commented that Smokey is different from cats she's known. While those cats would rub up against her and stare up at her with big cute eyes to get what they want, Smokey doesn't even bother: He meows to ask to be let out. She refuses. And he's like, fine, and walks away.

"I'm a tomcat. I don't cuddle up to just anybody."

The other day I left the door open for Smokey so he could come back in on his own after playing in the hallway. He had just stepped back in when someone from the building left. Smokey hopped back out, perhaps hoping that the door would stay open long enough for him to escape. But then he looked back up in alarm to see me follow him out to grab him and he had this hell-no-I-will-go-in-by-myself-thank-you look. Yeah, he ran back into the apartment himself.

"I'm a tomcat. I don't need to be carried in, thank you."

Compromising position

 "Zzzzzzz...."
Click.
 "What are you doing?!"
I take a full shot of your big body, little head.
"You have too much time on your hands."

I sit on things 5

I'm starting to let go of some of my archives for recycling to make more space. Looks like they are getting better use from Smokey.

He got more skillz

Smokey has a knack for looking cute when he wants something. The person who reported Smokey found when he was lost in the wild for three weeks knew that Smokey must be a house cat because of the way he tried to trot into people's houses.

"Hello, I'm so cute. Won't you take me home?"

Unleashed

Lately, we've been letting Smokey out without the leash but with supervision. One day when we were doing laundry and Smokey was let out into the hallway, he escaped out the front door of the building without his leash on. Then with a lot of courage we left him out there by himself while we dashed over to the laundry room. And you know what, he didn't go far. That time, he sat contently chewing on grass.

These days... well, let's just say it's good that Smokey doesn't move very fast...

Hey, Smokey. Where are you going?
"Away from you."
